How to Crop an Image
I'm sure this has happened to everyone, you take what you think is a really great unposed picture and there's something wrong with it. The picture below was taken in Letchworth State Park in New York. I was driving along a road during the week right before the entrances close for the day (so it was deserted and quiet). I had stopped to turn around and a wild turkey walked out of the woods and walked across the street behind my car. I quickly snapped the picture below.

Right after i took the picture the wild turkey decided that I was thinking about having him for dinner and ran into the woods on the other side of the road. Having the car in the picture would have upset me if it was 1980 and there was no digital technology to make this into a good picture (for not a lot of money). With a digital camera, this is easily fixed with a little software. Once I got home, I transfer the image from my storage card to my PC and started to make it into a good picture.
One of the most useful editing tools in any image editing software is the 'Crop' Tool. This tool is the almost the exact opposite of a delete tool. The Crop Tool allows you to delete everything EXCEPT the area that you've selected. What I wanted to do was crop the image so that the car was not in the picture. To crop the image:
- First, click on the 'Select' Tool ( ).
- Next, click and drag in the image window. As long as you hold the mouse button down, you can change the size of the selection.
- Next, click on the 'Crop' Tool ( ).
The image below is the final image after cropping out the unwanted car.
