Online Print Cropping

The photos below were all taken by a Canon Digital Rebel (D300). The Digital Rebel takes photos in a 3:2 pixel ratio. The examples below illustrate (with a yellow bar) what portions of the photograph will be cropped by most online photo printing services.

4xD - no cropping

4x6 (1/4 inch from each side cropped, about 12.5% of the pixels)

(6x9, 8x12, 10x15 prints - similar cropping)

5x7 print (1/8 inch from each side cropped, about 5% of the pixels)

8x10 print (1/3 inch from each side cropped, about 6% of the pixels)

11x14 print (1/4 inch from each side cropped, about 18% of the pixels)

Please note -- this image is the same image used for the 3:2 ratio illustration, but has been resized to emulate a 4:3 pixel resolution.
