History Details For - Townsend Acts

1/1/1767
Charles Townsend had thought that the Americans objected only to "internal taxes", like the Stamp Act, but they wouldn't oppose "external taxes", such as duties on imports. The Townsend Acts imposed duties on imports from England of glass, painters materials and tea. The proceeds of the taxes were to be used to pay the salaries of the colonial governors and judges, who had previously been paid by colonial legislatures and had therefore been "beholden" to them. In addition tot he duties on imports, some Writs of Assistance were revived and provisions were made for a reorganized customs service that would be responsible to the British Crown.
