History Details For - Fort Stanwix8/3/1777The western prong of the British offensive of 1777 was under the command of Colonel Barry St. Leger. On July 25, St. Leger left Fort Oswego NY on Lake Ontario with 1700 British, Tories and Indians. He reached Fort Stanwix (Schuyler) on the Mohawk River. The fort was defended by 750 Americans under Colonel Peter Gansevoort. St. Leger laid seige on August 3. The American relief column of 800 men under General Nicholas Herkimer came from Fort Dayton 30 miles away. Six miles from the fort, they were ambushed at Oriskany on August 6th.
To relieve the fort, General Philip Schuyler sent a second army under General Benedict Arnold (950 volunteers). This army frightened St. Legers Indian support who fled. St. Leger then raised the seige on the Fort and fell back to Fort Oswego on August 22nd. The failure of this prong of the invasion helped to doom Burgoyne at Saratoga 2 months later. Links:
