History Details For - Saratoga - Freeman's Farm9/19/1777Although the battle of Saratoga is typically spoken of as 1 battle, it was really 2 different battles nearly a month apart. On September 13th, General John Burgoyne crossed to the west bank of the Hudson with the 6000 men that remained in his army. The British found the American army (now under General Horatio Gates) entrenched on Bemis Heights. Gates was in command of about 7000 troops with fresh militia pouring in every day.
Burgoyne tried to outflank the Americans by sending General Simon Fraser with 2000 men to seize the high ground on the left of Gates. This wing of Americans was commanded by General Benedict Arnold with support from General Daniel Morgan and Colonel Henry Dearborn and their riflemen. The woods around Freeman's farm was the scene of a fierce fight. In this first battle of Saratoga, Burgoyne lost 600 killed, wounded or captured. Of the 3000 Americans in the battle, there were 319 casualties. Links:
